San Juan County Land BankFree-Simple Acquisitions and ConservationFew places in the San Juan Islands are without the imprint of human activity, without stories and memories. They have names that tell of interesting times and spirited people. There is an enduring quality to the way of life here. Islanders agree it is important to ensure that the distinct character of life in the islands will endure. As one way to do this, they created the San Juan County Land Bank. In 1990, San Juan County voters approved funding for the Land Bank through a one percent real estate transfer tax. In 1999, by nearly a 73% majority, the Land Bank was renewed for 12 more years. This tax is paid by purchasers of property in the County. Land Bank funds are set aside expressly for the purpose of preserving the natural heritage of the San Juan Islands. Through conservation easements or outright purchases, the Land Bank can protect special properties. These may be beaches or shorelines, woodlands or wetlands, homesteads or farmland, or any other important places. Decisions about how to spread Land Bank funds are made by a commission of seven citizens representing the islands. Land Bank Commissioners are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners and serve four-year terms. For more information visit the Land Bank website. |
